New Delhi, November 11, 2025:
A devastating car bomb explosion near Delhi’s iconic Red Fort on Monday evening killed at least 13 people and injured several others, prompting a nationwide terror investigation. Authorities have invoked the UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act) and the Explosives Act, treating the incident as a potential terrorist strike.
What Happened
The explosion occurred around 6:50 p.m. near Gate 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station — one of the busiest intersections in Old Delhi.
Witnesses said a white Hyundai i20 car stopped briefly at a red light before bursting into flames. The impact shattered glass windows, set nearby vehicles ablaze, and sent people running for safety.
Police and emergency teams reached the spot within minutes, while bystanders used mobile flashlights to rescue the injured from burning vehicles. The area was cordoned off, and metro services were briefly halted.
Rising Death Toll & Response
Initially reported as eight dead, the death toll climbed to 13 overnight as several critically injured victims succumbed in hospital.
Hospitals in the capital have been placed on high alert, with burn units mobilized.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh for each deceased victim’s family and ₹2 lakh for those seriously injured.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the “cowardly act” and assured that those responsible will not be spared.
Investigation Underway
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Delhi Police’s Special Cell have begun a joint probe. Forensic experts collected debris samples to determine the type of explosive used.
Preliminary findings point to a remote-controlled or timer-based improvised explosive device (IED) planted in the car.
Officials are also scanning over 200 CCTV cameras across the Red Fort corridor and Chandni Chowk area to track the car’s movements prior to the blast.
The car was reportedly registered to a Delhi-NCR resident; police are verifying ownership and possible theft reports.
Security Tightened Across States
The blast near one of India’s most symbolic monuments — from where the Prime Minister delivers the Independence Day address — has sparked major security concerns.
Following the explosion:
Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram were placed on high alert.
Extra police and paramilitary forces were deployed near tourist spots, metro stations, and markets.
Airports and border check-posts intensified screening of vehicles.
A senior Delhi Police officer said,
“Given the location and intensity, this cannot be treated as a routine accident. Every possible angle, including terrorism, is being examined.”
Eyewitness Accounts
Local shopkeeper Rafiq Khan, who was meters away, said,
“The whole ground shook like an earthquake. There was fire everywhere, cars burning, people screaming for help.”
Several bystanders helped carry injured people to ambulances before rescue teams arrived. The scene was filled with thick black smoke, flames, and the smell of burning fuel.
Symbolism of the Red Fort
The Red Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands as a national symbol of India’s freedom. The fact that the blast occurred so close to its walls has raised deep security concerns among citizens and officials alike.
Experts say the site’s proximity to heavy traffic and market areas makes it vulnerable if not constantly monitored.
Authorities are awaiting FSL and NIA reports to confirm:
The exact nature of the explosive used.
Whether the car was stolen or used intentionally for the attack.
Any links to extremist or organised groups.
If confirmed as an act of terror, this would mark the deadliest explosion in Delhi since 2011, when multiple bombings shook the High Court area.
Summary
Casualties: 13 dead, dozens injured.
Location: Red Fort Metro Station, Old Delhi.
Laws invoked: UAPA + Explosives Act.
Agencies: NIA + Delhi Police + FSL.
Security: High alert across NCR.
Next: Forensic report and suspect identification expected within 48 hours.
